Bygårdene i Erling Skakkes gate 34-44 ble søkt revet 2. desember 1968. Rivingen ble gjennomført i januar/februar 1969.

Erling Skakkes gate går gjennom Trondheim sentrum, fra Kjøpmannsgata i øst til Ilen kirke i vest. Gaten ble i 1886 oppkalt etter jarlen Erling Ormsson Skakke (1115-1179).

Erling Skakke kom i kamp med araberne utenfor Sicilia, hvor han fikk et hugg i halsen slik at den kom til å helle over, eller på «skakke». Derav tilnavnet Skakke.

Erling Skakke døde i slaget på Kalvskinnet i 1179, og er gravlagt i Domkirken.
