| Description |
Afrikaans: Veer van 'n langooruil van naderby: aan die voorrand (bo) is die kamvormige fraiing sigbaar. Dit reduseer lugturbulensie sodat geen hoorbare geruis nagelaat word nie. Die opsigtelik pelsagtige dons aan die veeroppervlak dien 'n soortgelyke doel. Die oorkantste faan van die veer (onder) het ook geen skerp rand nie, maar word deur 'n sagte veeragtige rand omsoom. Wanneer jy aan 'n uilveer raak voel dit sag en donsig, heel anders as byvoorbeeld dié van 'n jakkalsvoël.
Deutsch: Feder einer Waldohreule: oben sieht man den Rand der Feder mit kammförmigen Fortsätzen. Diese verwirbeln die Luft so, daß keine lauten Luftgeräusche entstehen. Eine ähnliche Funktion hat der fellartige Flaum, der auf der Oberfläche der Feder zu sehen ist. Auch die andere Fahne der Feder (unten im Bild) ist nicht durch einen scharfen Rand begrenzt sondern endet in weichen fedrigen Fransen. Wenn man eine Eulenfeder anfaßt fühlt sie sich weich und flauschig an, ganz anders als die Feder eines Mäusebussards.
