Die energetisch günstigen (+) und ungünstigen (-) Orientierungen der magnetischen Momente gelten unter der Voraussetzung einer ferromagnetischen Grenzflächenkopplung; im Falle einer antiferromagnetischen Kopplung kehren sich diese Zeichen um. Im Falle einer rauen Grenzfläche heben sich die energetisch günstigen und ungünstigen Orientierungen im Mittel auf; wenn die Ausbildung von Domänenwänden erlaubt ist, kann dadurch eine weitere Energieabsenkung geschehen, was zu einer Nettomagnetisierung im Antiferromagneten und damit zu einem Exchange Bias führen kann.
