| Description |
English: This image shows the insides of a typical 45 Mbps DS-3 fiber optic transmitter device circa 2001, consisting of a small square PIN photo diode, mounted optical fiber, and support components. The size of theis approximately 1mm by 3mm. A transmitter and receiver would be placed on either end of a single fiber strand, to transmit data in one direction along the fiber. A pair of these fibers, similarly fitted out, would form a bidirectional circuit capable of transmitting 45Mbps simultaneously in both directions the equivalent of ~670 simultaneous phone conversations. |

This image is part of a two image set which includes both the matched transmitter and receiver modules for a 45 Mbps DS-3 connection. A pair of transmitters and receivers ( two fibers, with a TX and RX device on either end ) would be used for a DS-3 circuit used in digital telephony applications, carrying up to 670 simultaneous phone calls per pair.
