Color woodcut by Kitagawa Utamaro, 1790. Modern reprint, between 1918 and 1923. ポッピン/ぽっぴん ), popin (ポピン/ぽぴん ) or popen (ポペン/ぽぺん ) or as bīdoro (ビードロ ) from the Portuguese word vidro meaning "glass". The toys were popular in Japan during the early 1790s, when Utamaro is believed to have designed this print.The print appears in two of Utamaro's print series, Fujin Sōgaku Jittai ("Ten Physiognomies of Women") and Fujo Ninsō Juppin ("Ten Classes of Women's Physiognomy"), but from the inscription in the upper right ( 婦女人相十品 ) shows it is from the latter series.English names for the print include "Woman/Girl Blowing a Glass Toy/Pipe", "Woman/Girl Blowing a Glass Noisemaker", "Woman/Girl Blowing a Poppin/Poppen/Popin" and "Woman/Girl Blowing a Bidoro/Vidro".
