English: Literary writer Multatuli (pseudonym of Eduard Douwes Dekker) dramatically expresses his sorrow, doubt in the existence of God and his subsequent deconversion after his struggle with the problem of evil and inconsistent revelations. This poem, published in 1861 in magazine De Dageraad, made him famous and adored amongst Dutch freethinkers.
