f these occupationshis spirits received a great shock from the deathof a favourite daughter, of a consumption, atthe age of sixteen. An unusually severe winterafterwards brought on a catarrhal affection,succeeded by a nervous fever, under which hesunk on February 7, 1799, in the sixty-ninthyear of his age. Dr. Hedwig was a man ofgreat modesty and candour, benevolent, friendly,and upright; little solicitous of wealth andhonours, and void of all parade in teaching andwriting. He attained his eminence solely byquiet and patient industry.
