y had already pursued the column using theFairfield Road, and had had a sharp engagement with it.French, from his base at Frederick, had destroyed thebridge across the Potomac River at Falling Waters,with the aim of preventing Lee from crossing theswollen stream at that point. But a general movement of the Union Army inpursuit of Lee was not begun until the latter had reachedHagerstown. Meade, then, under orders from Washing-ton, moved his forces southward. Lee, however, hadsufficient advantage in the start to enable him to crossinto Virginia before the pursuing army could reach him. Hill and Longstreet crossed the Potomac on impro-vised bridges at Falling Waters, and Ewell forded theriver at Williamsport some days before Meade and theUnion Army arrived at its north bank. With the swollen tide of the Potomac between them,the two armies set about the task of repairing, as bestthey could, the fearful ravages which the greatest ofmodern battles had wrought in their men and equip-ment. 49

50 Gettysburg BattlefieldToday In the half century which has elapsed since thehostile forces of Meade and Lee clashed on the soil ofPennsylvania, interest in the great battlefield has grownwith each succeeding year. Its visitors are numberedby thousands annually. They come from all quarters of the world, andinclude survivors of the battle; the friends and relativesof those who fought; students of military history; schoolchildren; and all citizens of the Union who honor thememory and appreciate the valor of their countrymen. No battlefield in the world is so elaborately marked,so easy to understand by the layman as well as the mili-tary man. So accurately have the positions of thevarious commands in the battle been designated, thatone has no difficulty in finding the location of any regi-ment during the three days of the fight.
