Mme Anne Louise Boivin d'Hardancourt Brillon de Jouy “Marche des insurgents,” 1778 Original owned by American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia Franklin's neighbor in France, Madame Brillon, wrote this piece for the armonica to celebrate a turning point for America in the Revolutionary War. Mozart and Beethoven also composed works for the instrument, though Franklin preferred simple Scottish airs. Charles James

The armonica's concepts is based on the
sound produced by running a wet finger
around the rim of a glass. Franklin
noted that “of all my inventions, the
glass armonica has given me the greatest
personal satisfaction.” Deborah likened
its sound to “the musick of angels.”
