Summary[edit]

Description

Gobowen South signal box located by the Up Main line at south of Gobowen station by the junction for the Oswestry line. Monday 7th September 1987

Gobowen South signal box was a McKenzie and Holland Type 3 design that opened in the early 1880s for the Great Western Railway. A cast iron nameplate for the signal box was ordered from the Great Western Railway's Reading signal works on 21st February 1898, the outline of its former location can just be made out between operational floor windows and the centre locking room window. A replacement 80 lever Great Western Railway Vertical Tappet 3-bar frame was installed on 13th June 1911, later being extended to 81 levers. Closure came on 5th June 1987 when control of the Gobowen to Llanddu Junction branch passed to Gobowen North signal box and the absolute block section was extended to between Gobowen North and Whittington Low Level signal boxes

The Great Western Railway milepost at the far end of the signal box shows the location is 189½ miles from London Paddington station
