| Description |
English: "El Honor de un Patriota Español no se vende" (The Honour of a Spanish Patriot is not for sale) are the proud words pronounced by Capitán Vicente Moreno to reject the ignominious proposal made by the French commander (Sébastiani) on August 9, 1810, to commit high treason by switching side and join the occupying napoléonic forces. The next day, Sébastiani had D. Vincente Moreno hanged in front of his wife María Teresa Velasco García and their four young children. In 1906, Pablo Loyzaga Gutiérrez (1872-1951) created a bas-relief meant to be cast in bronze for the grave of Capitan Don Vicente Moreno ; it never materialized. Instead, a 1907 copy in marble by José Garcia has been affixed on the façade of the Infantry Barracks, former convent of La Merced, today the seat of the Military Government. It depicts a veiled lady placing a laurel wreath on the chest of a dead soldier, as a tribute to his heroism. |
