Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gravestone detail at Channelkirk Churchyard This winged hourglass on this 1740 headstone is an emblem of mortality. It is thought that when the hourglass is in the upright position, time is running out for the passer-by, and when in the horizontal position it means that time has run out for the departed. Sometimes wings are added to emphasise the speed with which time is passing.
