Français : "Commentaire: Ce portrait a été remarqué et acquis par Vivant Denon, alors directeur du Musée central des arts (Louvre), lors de la vente après décès du peintre Jean-François Colson. Denon pensait que le tableau était un Autoportrait de Sébastien Bourdon. Dans une lettre du 17 mars 1803 au ministre de l’Intérieur, Jean-Antoine Chaptal, il
en proposa l’achat pour le musée au prix où il l’avait acquis, 295 francs, précisant : « Ce tableau étant utile au musée qui possède déjà les portraits de Lebrun, du Poussin, de Vouet, de Mignard, artistes qui, ainsi que Sébastien Bourdon, ont illustré la France, leur patrie, dans la carrière des arts, je vous le propose pour le même prix » (cf.Denon, [1802-1815] éd. 1999). Le tableau a été considéré comme un Autoportrait de Bourdon jusqu’aux années 1960, Jacques Thuillier maintenant l’attribution à Bourdon, mais changeant le titre en Portrait de sculpteur (cf. Thuillier dans Thuillier et Châtelet, 1964). L’attribution à Bourdon a ensuite été elle-même contestée, notamment par Jean-Pierre Cuzin, qui proposa en 1979 une attribution à Charles Le Brun (cf.Cuzin, 1979a). Nous jugeons plus prudent de maintenir le tableau parmi les anonymes français du xviie siècle, en le datant vers 1650, le modèle étant plus probablement un amateur qu’un sculpteur. Il tient un moulage d’après la tête antique de Caracalla, dont la version la plus célèbre est le buste des musées du Vatican. Le tableau du Louvre a été restauré par Georges Zezzos à Montauban en 1941. Il a été rentoilé par Raymond Lepage en 1958 puis traité en couche picturale par Jacques Roullet en 1959." |
