Over in tree-lined Hviezdoslavovo Square is a statue of someone you might not immediately associate with Bratislava: Hans Christian Andersen. The Danish author visited what was then Pressburg in 1841 and paid the city one of its warmest compliments. When asked if he would write something about it, he said that there was no need to, as the city was a fairytale in itself. Bratislava Castle was at the time a ruin, which perhaps added to the romantic atmosphere of the small metropolis, then surrounded by fields and vineyards. The Andersen statue is the work of prolific Slovak sculptor Tibor Bártfay. Other works by him – he has produced well over 2,000 in his long career – can be seen all around the city, encompassing a diverse range of styles and subjects. He sculpted much of the statuary at the Slavín war memorial, the group in Ľudovít Štúr Square, the globe fountain in front of the Presidential Palace (and the female nudes cavorting in a fountain behind it), and the nude girl in Šafárikovo Square [visit.bratislava.sk] |
