the lower, is extended below the cheeks,and curved towards the back part of the neck, divid-ing the gray colour of the cheeks from the black ofthe throat. The top of the head and back, are agrayish ash colour; the rump, a dull greenish yellow.The tail is long and a little forked ; the two outmostfeathers on each side, white ; the rest black with greenedges : the first and second order of quills are blackwith gray edges ; the last order have broad margins ofa pale gray, and are very long, the third from thebody, reaching to the tip of the first quills, as in theLarks. The throat in the male is black; in the female,a dusky yellow. The breast, belly, and covert feathers under the tail,in both sexes are a bright yellow. The little Dragon-fly* figured on the plate, is onthe wing in May. Its haunts are near ponds andrivers; it is frequent amongst the bushes beside theriver Calder, near Halifax, and is, I think, the prettiestspecies of Dragon-fly we have in England. The Gray-Wagtail comes to us in April, and leavesus before winter. Its haunts are constantly stonybrooks or rivulets. The nest is most generally placedon the ledge of some rock whose foot is washed bythe current. The materials are dried grass, moss, andfibres of roots. The nest I now describe, was placedon a moist overshadowed rock, about six feet from thesurface of the water. The outside consists of roots, moss, and grass ; thenext coat consists of the same materials, but smallerand finer; the lining, immediately under the eggs, isa plentiful mixture of black and white hair. The nestis firm, round, and compact. The eggs are four or five; the ground colour adead white, and are speckled with small brown spots. The cock has a pleasing song in breeding time ; hisvoice is low, but the notes are sof
