Summary[edit]
DescriptionHeilbronn Badener-Hof-Kaserne 19730721 1.jpg |
English: This is Badenerhof Kaserne in Heilbronn, where I was stationed from December 1959 to the end of July 1960. It housed members of the 507th Army Security Agency Group. My room was the last two windows on the right of the second floor. I shared the room with three other men. It was built for the German army in the 1930s, as Ludendorff Kaserne. Rifle racks built into the wall show that the room was intended for 12 German soldiers. The U.S. Army moved into Badenerhof in the early 1950s. The Army left in the early 1990s, Houses and apartments were built on the site. This photo, which I took in 1973, is geotagged.
As I remember, soldiers lived only on the second and third floors. The first floor had offices, the recreation room, and perhaps other spaces. This suggests that 96 men lived in this building in the 1960s and 1970s. The same rooms might have housed 284 German soldiers in the 1930s. The building on the right housed the 23rd Ordnance Company. This was a separate unit, and we had nothing to do with them. The barber shop and tailor shop, run by German civilians, were on the ground floor of this building. There may have been a small PX in Badenerhof - I just do not remember. For any major items, you had to go to the PX at Wharton Barracks. That is where I bought the Voightländer camera which I used in the rest of my time in Germany, and until 1967. |
