Annotations: Cartouche of Usertesen I Mariette B.C. 285 Lepsius 2380 Wilkinson 2080 XII Dynasty. This obelisk and a few walls are all that is left of the famous ancient Heliopolis or City of the Sun. Here was the great sun temple the most ancient and renowned shrine in Egypt. [Tum Harmachis]. Moses married a daughter of one of the priests of this temple. Plato is said to have resided and studied here for thirteen years. Cambyses is said to have been the destroyer of Heiopolis. The Obelisk which stands here, made of red granite of Assuan, is next to the oldest yet found. It was erected by Usertesen second kind of 12th Dynasty and is consequently between four and five thousand years old—it is sixty six feet high
