| Description |
Nederlands: Een beulszwaard van hout lijkt niet erg praktisch bij het uitvoeren van een onthoofding. Daar was dit achttiende-eeuwse houten zwaard dan ook niet voor bedoeld – het had een zuiver symbolische functie. De beul of scherprechter gebruikte het om op het schavot drie keer boven het hoofd van een veroordeelde te zwaaien: het teken dat hem gratie was verleend. Voor zover bekend is dit houten zwaard (afkomstig uit Utrecht) het enige bekende exemplaar dat in Nederland bewaard is gebleven.
