DescriptionHylaeus species, f, Papau New Guinea, face 2014-11-01-22.33.28 ZS PMax (15800185831).jpg |
Hylaeus species, Badass Masked Bee, specimen collected in Papua New Guinea Thin, relatively hairless, dangerous looking …. Masked Bees are waspish in aspect since they carry their pollen and nectar internally rather than trapped in external hairs. They are famous for blowing bubbles, which is their way of lightening their load by evaporating off the water component of the nectar they imbibe. Found throughout the world, they are one of the best colonizers not because they are strong fliers, but likely because they nest in holes in plant pith and insect burrows in wood and potentially survived ocean trips in those ways. The only undisputed bee to ever make it all the way out the Hawaiian islands, Hylaeus radiated with the highly specialized plant groups there to form over 60 species of masked bees. Now mostly rare and difficult to find, Hawaiian Masked Bees must compete with invasive Masked Bees from both the Old World and Australasia.
