Summary[edit]

This is a 48-bit PNG image describing the MC6845 video controller's palette, used in the IBM PC's CGA (text mode) and EGA (two graphics modes). The colours used for the palette squares are precise 16-bit values of the MC6845's range: 0, (2↑n−1)∕3, (2↑n−1)∕3×2, 2↑n−1 (effectively 0000, 5555, AAAA and FFFF). The colours used for the rest of the objects are full red, green and blue, and 75% grey (C000 for all of R, G and B).

Making[edit]

I wrote a Unicode text file first—the swatches are the character U+25A0 (black square); then I pasted into Wordpad and set the font to Lucida Console. Then I made a 24-bit BMP image and filled the colours in. After that, I saved as an ASCII PPM file, and then did a search-and-replace to upsample the values from 8 bits per channel to 16 bits per channel. I then used pnmtopng (one of the GNU pngutils) with the option -force to make an exact conversion to PNG, and then optimised it with pngcrush (another one of the pngutils).
