ts clinging ivy, standing in themidst of its ancient churchyard, which comprises nearly twoacres, was built in the year 1739. The cannon ball, nowimbedded in the upper southeast corner of the church, was firedby Lord Dunmore during the British bombardment of Norfolk,on January 1, 1776. The initial B on the south wall standsfor Samuel Boush, who gave the land. . The brick and woodworkof which the church is constructed was brought from England.One of the treasures of the church is John Hancocks chair. Itis the one in which he sat when the Declaration of Independencewas signed, and is preserved as a relic of great value. In theburial ground, moss-covered tombs, with curious epitaphs, markthe last resting place of some of Norfolks earliest inhabitants.Further down Church Street, and on the right between Coveand Plume, is the hall of the I. O. O. F.. and nearly opposite isthe new home of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The presentheadquarters of the Naval Y. M. C. A. are located in front of

A. will be erected atthe corner of Brooke Avenue and Boush Street, the site andbuilding to cost $250,000, being donated by John D. Rocke-feller. Turning to the right into Main Street and proceedingtoward Commercial Place, you pass the Victoria (Stag) Hoteland the Majestic Theater on the left. At the head of Commer-cial Place stands a monument erected to the memory of theConfederate dead. With all its activity and every day hurryin the building of a great city, Norfolk has not forgotten the boysin gray, who went forth to the field of battle in 1861. On the2 2d of February, 1899, the corner stone was laid at the corner ofMain Street and Commercial Place. The base is surmounted bya shaft fifty feet high, and while not yet complete, it standsto-day a beautiful and fitting testimonial to the devotion andvalor of those who sacrificed their lives during the great strugglebetween the North and South.
