Description
English: Ironstone concretion from the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.

Concretions are post-depositional structures found in some sedimentary successions, particularly in shales. They vary in mineralogy, size, and shape, but often have slightly flattened spheroidal shapes. They typically form by post-depositional mineralization around some nucleus (a rock fragment or fossil fragment). This concretion is unusual in being hollow - several smaller concretions line the cavity walls.

Stratigraphy: probably the Logan Formation, Osagean Stage, upper Lower Mississippian

Locality: undisclosed site at or near the town of Nashport, northwestern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA
