Summary[edit]

Description
English: (1 in a multiple picture set)

The water of Crater Lake IS that blue. It is over 1900 feet deep, and all the water is runoff from snow. No streams run in or out of it. The deep blue comes from the depth. Sunlight is able to penetrate deep into the water. The depth absorbs many of the longer rays and reflecting the shorter rays of the white light spectrum. Red light is the longest wavelength, thus gets absorbed. Violet and blue light are the shortest wavelengths, thus get scattered and reflected back to us, causing the lake to be its famous Crater Lake blue.

That is Llao Rock, the tallest point left of Mount Mazama which collapsed after erupting, behind Wizard Island. If you look close, you can see the top of Mt. Thielsen peeking over the rim. That peak is 20 miles north of Crater Lake.
