Text Appearing Before Image:
on the TrueChristianas Burden. Another characteristic sermon of ThomasBoston is that upon Jacob wrestling with theAngel. After narrating the recorded history ofthis transaction, the preacher proceeds to moral-ize upon it: JACOB WRESTLING WITH THE ANGEL, First.—We must consider what the man said whowrestled with Jacob, * Let me go, for the day break-eth. And here several things may be inquired into :particularly (ist) who was he that wrestled with Jacob.—Atis. That it was one in the form of a man, all partiesseem to agree. But then, who was he that assumedthis form, there are different opinions among interpre-ters, both Jewish and Christians. I am of opinion thatit was God that wrestled with him, having assumed theshape and form of a man for that purpose. And whatsatisfies me therein is, that Jacob not only solicits himfor his blessing, but expressly calls him God, saying, Ihave seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.I suppose, likewise, that it was the Second Person—God
Text Appearing After Image:
JACOB WRESTLING WITH THE ANGEL. THOMAS BO ST 01^ 399 the Son—who wrestled with him in the assumed form :for the prophet Hosea, speaking of Jacob, says, Hehad power over the angel and prevailed. This is oneof the titles of the Messiah, He is called the messen-ger of the covenant, or the angel of the covenant. TheHebrew word is the same in both places. Besides, from what Christ himself saith, No man hath seenGod at any time, it seems to follow, that all the ap-pearances of God to the Old Testament saints, in whichhe assumed the figure and affections of a man, were notthe appearance of God the Father—whom no man hathseen at any time—but the appearance of God the Son,as a prelude or introduction to his assuming our naturein his incarnation. In these appearances he put on ournature, as it were, to try how it would suit him, andquickly put it off again. In his incarnation he put it onso as never to put it off any more. Secondly.—What sort of wrestling was it) and howcould worm Jacob
