The Shields Daily News for 16 October 1907 reports:
“EMBEZZLEMENT AT NORTH SHIELDS.
At North Shields Police Court today, James Alder (57), labourer, South Shields, was charged on a warrant with having, on the 21st ult., embezzled 8s 8d, the money of Hy. Stott, lodging house keeper, Milburn Place, by whom he was employed. The prosecutor said that part of the accused’s duty was to collect the money from the lodgers. On the date in question the accused suddenly disappeared, leaving the sum of 8s 8d unaccounted for.
Detecive Sergt. Hall said he arrested the prisoner in a lodging house at South Shields, on Tuesday night. In reply to the charge accused said “Not that much; I only got 7s.” The prisoner, who had nothing to say, was committed to prison for 14 days with hard labour”.
These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1).
