Title
jet; waste from working
Description
English: Fourteen pieces of jet, probably waste material from jet working. One of the pieces has diagonal scratch marks on both sides, whereas another piece has small marks running a short way straight down a flat edge. These marks could indicate working or may be the result of weathering. One of the main sources of jet is Whitby on the East Coast of Yorkshire, and jet was taken to York to be worked as well as there being smaller workshops in other local towns. This group was found en route between Whitby and York. Jet jewellery was very popular in the Roman period, but also in the Victorian era (Allason-Jones, 1996, Roman Jet in the Yorkshire Museum). This material was found near to a Roman fort and Vicus, so a Roman date is possible, but a Victorian date seems just as likely. With no datable associated finds or clear decoration, it is impossible to assign a more accurate date.
