Za protektorátu byl jednou z nejvýznamnějších postav II. odboje, kde působli jako čelný představitel ilegální vojenské odboové organizace "Obrana národa". Spolupracovník zpravodajsko - sabotážní skupiny "Tři králové" (Balabán, Mašín, Morávek). Josef Churavý se svými rodiči před odchodem do první světové války. Fotografie datovaná 18. října 1914. Zleva: Matka - Marie Churavá rozená Fischerová (* 1873 - † 1960); Otec - Václav Churavý (* 1869 - † 1955); Sestra - Marie Zelená, rozená Churavá (* 1905 - † 1991); Josef Churavý (* 1894 – † 1942).
