TRINITARIAN PRIORY, ADARE PROCEEDINGS 195 THURSDAY, 29th JUNE The )3arty left at 10 oclock, the morning being dark and lowering,•and visited the OBriens Castle of Carrigogunnell (really CarraicUi gConaing or, 0 Gunnings Rock ), blown up by SGravenmore,after the siege of Limerick, in 1691. It stands on a bold volcanicrock, with a wide outlook down the Shannon Valle)r. A glimpseof the pre-Norman church and later monastic church of Mungret, afamous college in the ninth century, was seen on our way to theCastle. Passing Vermont and crossing the Ferry Bridge on theMaigue, we unfortunately ran into wetting mist, in which a few ofour members visited the early oratory of Killulta near Kildimo.The mist turned to heavy rain, which, iinfortunately, lasted duringour visits to Askeaton and Adare, rendering photography impossible.The Franciscan Friary and the Desmonds Hall at the first placewere thoroughly examined, both being very fine specimens of 14th.and 15th. century architecture.
