Description
Deutsch: Die Löwenbrücke ist eine 17,3 m lange und rund 2 m breite Fußgängerbrücke in Berlin-Tiergarten. Sie überspannt im Großen Tiergarten einen Wasserlauf. Das denkmalgeschützte Bauwerk aus dem Jahr 1838 ist die erste Hängebrücke Berlins. Den Namen trägt sie nach vier Löwenfiguren, die die Tragseile in ihren Mäulern halten. Die Brücke geht auf Pläne von Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse und Christian Friedrich Tieck, die Figuren auf Pläne eines Schülers von Christian Daniel Rauch zurück. Vorbild war die Löwenbrücke in Sankt Petersburg. Nach einer Teilzerstörung im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Brücke 1958 weitgehend originalgetreu rekonstruiert.
English: The Löwenbrücke (german for: lionbridge) is a listed footbridge in Berlin-Tiergarten, crossing a watercourse in the park Großer Tiergarten. The bridge was built in 1838 according to plans by Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse and Christian Friedrich Tieck. Its the first suspension bridge Berlin's. Its abutments are crowned with four sculptures of lions, which give the bridge its name. The structure, suspended by cables emerging from the mouths of lions, was taken by the Bridge of Four Lions in Sankt Petersburg.
