Un second escarpement extrêmement découpé est constitué par leCrétacé; il est très net près de Temassinin (vers 7° long. E. et 28°lat. N.), puis dans le Tinrert et au voisinage dIn Salah. On sait quedans lEst, la région paléozoïque sélargit et que la Craie recule jusquàla Hammada el Homra. Nous allons maintenant revenir en arrière pour préciser certainsdétails. La zone archéenne est constituée par des gneiss, des schistescristallins, des phyllades, des cipolins, du granité; elle est très plisséeet la direction N.-S. est prédominante. Des témoins de grès dévonienssétendent loin vers le Sud, atteignant même lAïr. Ils reposent endiscordance sur les terrains anciens et témoignent dune énormeextension antérieure de cette nappe. Ce sont des quartzites, reconnais-sablés sur de grandes distances, en partant de lOuest jusque dans le t^ 0°(P.) / G U/D/y////^
