| Description |
English: Large shed on former airfield This area was once part of an airfield. A warren of roads and tracks to both sides of this section of Hindolveston Road still connect what used to be sheds and hangars of the technical units. Work commenced in 1941 on this RAF airfield, which had three concrete runways, 37 hardstandings and seven hangars. During the early fifties it was used by USAF ground units and it was still reasonably intact until the 1980s. One of the hangars has since been used to hold bulk grain for an agricultural merchant; another is used by the
Department of the Environment to store equipment and yet another by a warehousing company. The control tower has been demolished but portions of the taxiway are still used by light aircraft. For more detailed information on this airfield see http://www.raf.mod.uk/bombercommand/s21.html |
