Summary[edit]

Description
English: Male civilians waving from the windows of a railway carriage. The caption indicates they were leaving Ruhleben, a camp near Berlin in which the Germans had interned British civilian men of military age who were in Germany at the start of the war.

Conditions in Ruhleben were uncomfortable but the men, who were sent food parcels from home, were often better fed than their German captors. They were also allowed to organise educational and cultural programmes and even had a library of 5,000 books provided by the British government.
[Original reads: 'No. IA/57575. The last farewell to Ruhleben.']
