There are a surprising number of Roman remains in the South of France - at Nimes, for example. The Romans needed to get a reliable water supply for that city and built a 50 Km (30 mile) aqueduct. The viaduct had to cross the valley of the River Gard (or Gardon) and they built this impressive viaduct. I find it remarkable that it's still in quite good condition despite being almost 2000 years old. No mortar was used - friction & gravity have held it in place, intact. It no longer carries water but it incorporates a bridge at a lower level that pedestrians can use and at certain times visitors can even walk across the top of the viaduct. It's the highest of all Roman viaducts, at 48.8 metres (160 feet) and unsurprisingly it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think it's a great feat of engineering and is set in beautiful countryside. Les Romains avaient besoin d'un approvisionnement en eau fiable pour cette ville et construisirent un aqueduc de 50 km. Le viaduc devait traverser la vallée du Gard (ou Gardon) et ils ont construit cet impressionnant viaduc. Je trouve remarquable qu’il soit encore en assez bon état malgré ses presque 2000 ans. Aucun mortier n'a été utilisé - le frottement et la gravité l'ont maintenu en place, intact. Il ne transporte plus d'eau mais intègre un pont à un niveau inférieur que les piétons peuvent utiliser et, à certains moments, les visiteurs peuvent même traverser le sommet du viaduc. C'est le plus haut de tous les viaducs romains, avec 48,8 mètres (160 pieds) et sans surprise c'est un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Je pense que c'est un grand exploit d'ingénierie et est situé dans une belle campagne. |
