Summary[edit]

Description

There are a surprising number of Roman remains in the South of France - at Nimes, for example. The Romans needed to get a reliable water supply for that city and built a 50 Km (30 mile) aqueduct.

The viaduct had to cross the valley of the River Gard (or Gardon) and they built this impressive viaduct. I find it remarkable that it's still in quite good condition despite being almost 2000 years old. No mortar was used - friction & gravity have held it in place, intact. It no longer carries water but it incorporates a bridge at a lower level that pedestrians can use and at certain times visitors can even walk across the top of the viaduct.

It's the highest of all Roman viaducts, at 48.8 metres (160 feet) and unsurprisingly it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think it's a great feat of engineering and is set in beautiful countryside.
