Description

Lepiota magnispora (Murrill)

Location: Auckland, New Zealand

Notes: This beautiful Lepiota species was found in native New Zealand forest in soil and leaf litter under Kunzea ericoides, Cyathea dealbata and Cyathea medullaris.
I am not certain that this is L. magnispora, it was the closest name I could find!
Pileus: 20-50mm in diameter. Conic to plane and slightly uplifted with maturity, with a broad umbo. Margin adorned with remnants of a fibrillose partial veil. Colour white with light brown floccose patches.
Stipe: 50-100mm long by 5-8mm in diameter. Even to slightly enlarged at the base, pruinose. Colour dingy white.
Lamellae: Attachment free. Close to subdistant. Margin eroded. Colour white.
The spores are a good match for L. magnispora in size and shape but the description I have read mentions that cystidia are absent, these specimens exhibit abundant cheilocystidia!
