Winter view in sun of Loch Leven Castle on Castle Island, Loch Leven Kinross. Queen Mary of Scotland was imprisoned in Lochleven between 1866-7 because of religeous unrest, sic. During this imprisonment she was forced to abdicate in favour of her son King James IV. With some help from residual loyals she escaped to regain some support but was routed at the Battle of Langside (Glasgow). Exiled from Scotland she put her faith in cousin the English Queen Elizabeth I, who allowed her Fotheringhay Castle as a place of 'house arrest'. Before 1824 the Loch was nine feet higher and the foot of the walls of the castle were the watermark To the left of the tower house the land is on a higher plain. This was at one time surrounded by a curatain wall and was part of the original Lochleven Castle where Mary would walk in the enclosed gardens. There were servants quarters and buildings within this enclosure which are noted in the Historic Scotland guide to the property. |
