Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lock at Eye Kettleby The Melton Mowbray navigation was built in the 1790s as an adjunct to the important River Soar navigation which connected Leicester with the River Trent. The navigation made use of the River Wreake although cuts were built, as here, to avoid weirs. The navigation fell victim to competition from the parallel railway and was abandoned in 1877. Plans exist to restore navigation to Melton although as the remains of this lock indicate there is plenty of work to do.
