Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Warrior's Grave of Boffalora d'Adda
  • Province Lodi, Region Lombardia, Italy

The inventory of this man's burial consists of an unusually richly decorated shield boss, an elaborate set of belt mountings ornamented in what is called the Germanic animal style, and a gold foil cross. The quality of the weapons and the belt mountings indicates that they belonged to a high-ranking warrior, and the gold foil cross points to his Christian belief. In Italy, gold foil crosses appear only in Lombard burials. The Romanic population of Italy generally buried their dead in the 7th century without grave goods. The belt set comprises two belt buckles, one diamond-shaped and two rectangular mountings, and two strap ends.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Raccolte Archeologiche e Numismatiche, Museo Archeologico, Milan.
Deutsch: Das Kriegergrab von Boffalora d'Adda
  • Provinz Lodi, Region Lombardia, Italien
