CHEDWORTH (Lower) WAR MEMORIAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE   In proud memory of the Chedworth men who gave their lives for their country in the Great War MCMXIV-XIX. This tablet was erected by their fellow parishioners  

                       The War Memorial

This War Memorial was originally dedicated in July 1920 at the former Congretational Chapel. It was rededicated here in July 1996 and also serves as a commemoration of the chapel community, its Chapel and the Old Manse


1914-1918 BROAD Arthur Charles Cpl 37313 Royal Garrison Artillery died 24/4/1916 age 23. He was the son of William Trotman & Clara Elizabeth, Chedworth. Buried at Guilford (Stoke) Old Cemetery Surrey G 379   DAY Walter George L/Cpl 1779 8th Gloucestershire Regt killed in action 7/4/1916. He was the son of George and Amelia who in 1911 were all living at Lower Chedworth. He worked as a labourer for tillers and plasterers. Buried in Rue-Du-Bacquerot No1 Military Cemetery Laventie France II.F.20   GREENWOOD Cecil Henry Pte 241095 1/5 Gloucestershire Regt died 20/10/1918 age 27. He was the son of Robert and Adelaide of Chedworth. In 1911 his mother was widowed and she along with her family were living at Church Row Chedworth. He is at rest in Hamburg Cemetery Germany VI.H.3   HOLLAND Wilfred Pte 3749 1/5 Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, formerly 7/2667 Territorial reserve Battalion, killed in action 17/4/1918 age 19. Son of Willoughby & Mary Ann, The Rookery Chedworth. Commemorated at Loos Memorial France   LEECH Joseph Young Pte 21097 1st Grenadier Guards killed in action 10/9/1916-12/9/1916. He was the son of John and Esther. In 1911 he was living with his wodowed mother at Springfield Cottage, Chedworth. He was working as a plasterer. His brother William Frederick served as Pte 5427, Gloucestershire Regiment. Enlisted 11th October 1898 and was discharged no longer fit for war service 10th October 1915. Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial Somme, France   MARSTON Charles Pte 9989 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers Killed in action 19/10/1914. He was born at Norton, Presteign, Radnor. He was the son of John and Olivia of Radnor. In 1911 he was living at Calves Hill, Chedworth with his cousin, John Stone and his wife Joanna. Charles was aged 12. He is at rest in Harlebeke New British Cemetery Belgium XIII.B.18   MORSE Harry Lawson Pte 17655 8th Gloucestershire Regt killed in action 7/6/1917 age 24. Son of James Thomas and Ellen, Cheap Street Chedworth. He is at rest in Wytschaete Military Cemetery Belgium I.F.8   NORMAN Charles Gilbert Pte 17739 9th Gloucestershire Regt died 25/4/1917 age 24. Son of Thomas & Elizabeth, Yanworth Common nr Chedworth and husband of Emma, Preston nr Cirencester. He is at rest in Doiran Military Cemetery Greece III.E.9   NORMAN William Stoker 1st Class K/1223 HMS “President” Royal Navy. Died 6/5/1919 age 35. Son of Thomas & Elizabeth, Yanworth Common Chedworth. He is at rest in Victoria (Mont-Fleuri) Cemetery Seychelles B.1.29   PEACHY William John Rifleman S/28469 9th Rifle Brigade killed in action 27/4/1917 age 22. Son of Philip & Mary Ann Fanny, nee Evans of Ashwell Lodge, Chedworth and formerly of Westerleigh Road, Yate, Gloucestershire and was the husband of Amy Naomi nee Preston, who he married on the 5th January 1916 at the Congregational Church, Cirencester At the of his death she was living at 15, City Bank, Watermoor, Cirencester. Commemorated at Arras Memorial France. Some notes from remains of his Army record. He enlisted on the 1st November 1915 aged 21 and 120 days. He gave Yate as his home town. On the 2nd December 1916 he embarked Southampton and disembarked La Havre the next day and on the 11th December he joined his regiment in the field. . The 27th April 1917 he was killed in action   ROOKE Frederick John Pte 15290 4th Grenadier Guards died of wounds 11/10/1917 aged 27. He was the son of George and Ann who in 1911 were living at Melrose Cottage, Chedworth. Frederick in 1911 was lodging at the home of William George and Jane Brown of 1a Benthall Place, St Thomas, Swansea. He was working for the railway company as a platelayer. He is at rest in Dozinghem Military Cemetery Belgium IX.H1   SEATES Harry Clement Acting Cpl 8595, 14th Stationary Hospital, Royal Army Medical Corps died 29/1/1919 age 22. He was the son of Clement Arthur and Kate Annie nee Holyoake of Fairview, Chedworth. He is at rest in Muranga (St James & all Martyrs) Churchyard Kenya. Buried in Middle of Cemetery   WHITING James George M.M., L/Cpl 7080 2nd Wiltshire Regt killed inn action 9/4/1917 age 30. Son of Frederick Henry and Mary Annie nee Day of Queen Street Chedworth. He is at rest in Wancourt British Cemetery France VI.E.24   All information is provided in good faith but, on occasions errors may occur.
