Description
Il gruppo scultoreo in marmo raffigura Maria reclinata su un giaciglio dopo il parto con ai lati due angeli. La scena è completata da un frammento in altorilievo raffigurante un gregge di pecore e buoi al pascolo. Le statue ornavano la lunetta del portale sinistro della facciata medievale della Cattedrale, dedicata a Maria. Nella scena, ambientata in una stalla, erano raffigurati Maria, che appare stanca dopo il parto, Giuseppe, suo sposo, e il neonato Gesù, mentre sullo sfondo erano scolpite le teste del bue e dell’asinello. Il rilievo con il gregge di animali al pascolo doveva essere completato dalle figure dei pastori e dell’angelo che portava l’annuncio della nascita di Cristo. I due angeli superstiti, in adorazione, si trovavano in alto, ai lati della scena. Le sculture erano pensate per essere viste dal basso, posizione dalla quale all'osservatore apparivano a tutto tondo.
