Summary[edit]

Description This three-story brick building stands along Main Street in my hometown of Sylva, North Carolina. Constructed during the 1920s, it was built during a period of rapid growth in the town, and a decade during which almost the entire 19th Century wood-frame false-front streetscape of the town was cleared away in favor of more modern brick buildings, most of which are very simple in design. This building housed a Philco Appliance Store by the 1970s, and has one of only two elevators in the Main Street buildings in town, though the elevator in the building is the older of the two, and is meant to be used only for freight. It also has the distinction of being one of only two buildings to have a sizable mechanical penthouse visible from Mill Street, with the penthouse being wooden, in contrast to the brick penthouse on the other building. The building today, along with two adjacent buildings, is home to Livingston’s Photos, and the upper floors appear to be used for storage. Next to the building is the old Pliskin, Londoner, and Schumann (P.L.&S.) Department Store Building, which is remarkably similar in design to a larger store built by the same company on Main Street in nearby Canton, North Carolina. The building, today home to a bookstore, was home to Schulman’s Department Store for many decades, which was a Main Street fixture when I was growing up and the only place in town to buy formalwear. Sadly, upon the passing of Sol Schulman, the store closed, and the store, the single remaining of two locations that existed from the 1930s to the 1950s, became home to new tenants.
