DESCRIPTION "Most travelers associate Keene with its major thoroughfares - the streetscapes by which the center is approached. Thoreau wrote that "Keene Street strikes straight and long - the town is known far and near for its handsome street." This description is as accurate today as when he wrote it in 1850. If the width of the street is unique, the fact that it was laid out over two centuries ago makes it a monument to early city planning."
