da thickened or granular state of the membrane, with adhesionsbetween the various viscera, retraction and thickening of the mesen-tery, etc. The microscopic appearances of the abdominal wall inFordyces case are shown in Fig. 53; the endothelium was entirelydestroyed, and the sub-endothelial connective tissue greatly thickened.Enormous hypertrophy of the pancreas was referred to in one case(E. Martins specimen, Monatsehr. f. GchiirtsJc., xxvii. 28, 1865). It isa remarkable fact that lesions of the liver and spleen seem to havebeen rarely noted, a striking occurrence when the pathology of ascitesin the adult is borne in mind. The bladder is sometimes found inan over-distended condition; and I have elsewhere (58) gatheredtogether records of seventeen cases in which this association of foetalascites and distension of the bladder was observed. In some casesthere was also dilatation of the ureters and hydronephrosis. Some-times there was a urethral septum or valve to account for the vesical

In Fordycescase (loc. cit.) and in some others the genital organs were malformed,as were also the lower part of the large intestine and the rectum;in the former there was a double uterus and vagina, and a tuberclewhich probably represented the clitoris (Fig. 54), and in Olshausensspecimen (Arcli.f. Gynack., ii. 280, 1871) the bladder communicatedwith the uterus, and the clitoris was absent. I have grouped this fcetal morbid state among the idiopathicdiseases, and, therefore, it may be gathered that I regard its etiologyas unknown. At the same time, there are some cases in which itseems fair to regard the ascitic condition as the result of foetalsyphilis arising from maternal (or paternal) infection, and con-sequently as a transmitted disease
