El Catálogo del Coloniaje dice que “fue un varón justo. Desde la niñez mostró su humildad, su virtud y su dulzura. Infatigable misionero, restauró la abandonada iglesia de la Compañía (1816) e invirtió todo su patrimonio en la construcción de la casa de ejercicios de San José, que ocupa una manzana completa (1821). De simple clérigo pasó a ser obispo (1830), y diez años más tarde fue promovido al arzobispado, siendo el primer prelado de la arquidiócesis. Falleció en Valparaíso el 3 de mayo de 1843”.

La obra fue donada al Museo Histórico Nacional por Luis Surieta Cañas en 1949.
