English: This marble monument near the top of the hill at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery is surrounded by wild roses, and reads as follows: "To the 3000 soldiers in this cemetery, from every Southern state, who fell on Georgia soil, in defense of Georgia rights and Georgia homes." The inscription is followed by this poem: "They sleep the sleep of our noble slain, defeated, yet without a stain, proudly and peacefully." |

The Marietta Confederate Cemetery holds 3,000 soldiers from many Confederate states. These men were all killed in the state of Georgia during the Civil War (1861-1865). Most are in graves marked only by blank, upright marble markers surrounding larger markers identifying their regiments.
