Summary[edit]

Description Maryland Boy Scouts -- 636 of them -- came to Aberdeen Proving Ground Oct. 15 for the inaugural STEM Merit Badge Day. The Scouts completed requirements toward earning a merit badge in one of 16 disciplines, ranging from chemistry and robotics to nuclear science and aviation. Senior Installation Commander Maj. Gen. Nick Justice, an Eagle Scout himself, led the Scouts in reciting the Scout Oath and Scout Law during opening ceremonies. Matt Myers, program development specialist from the Boy Scouts' national office, gave special thanks to Justice for opening the installation to the Scouts, to the many volunteers in STEM-related fields who guided the Scouts on their educational quest, and to the parents who shepherded their troops to APG. Each group of Scouts pursuing the same merit badge were led by plebes (and Eagle Scouts) from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Several APG organizations demonstated their capabilities to the Scouts so they could see how STEM education has applications in medical, engineering, and defense careers.
