English: This is a digitized scan of the original 35mm black and white Kodak Tri-X negative of this image. The photograph was taken while on a hike through the woods that surrounded the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Southern California in the summer of 1964 at sundown. I had prepared my camera set up for this situation, since I had earlier discovered an area where immature hummingbirds appeared to settle in for the night. This was a very lucky shot since it was shot handheld at close range with an extended 300mm Takumar lens on a Honeywell Pentax 35mm SLR with a strobonar electronic flash at 1/60th of a second. The hummingbird allowed me to get within 6 feet for what is almost a macrophotograph. There is some ghost imaging due to the bird flicking its wing just as I shot the picture, showing both the electronic flash and the 1/60th natural back-lit image. Minor photoshopping has been used to smooth and lighten the background and to remove dust and scratches to the original film. The black and white film, along with the flash, allowed for a clear rendering of how reflective and shiny many of the feathers are (metallic green in color). Also, note the pollen clusters near the beak of the bird collected there earlier while the hummingbird fed on nectar.
