And more eloquent than all—with the im-pressive eloquence of the tomb—there before the altar lay all thatwas mortal of Bishop Ryan in the sweet repose of hallowed death The scene, the occasion, the career and character of his de-parted friend—all appealed to the sensibilities of the orator andgave him an eloquence of the heart far more inspiring than themost elaborate preparation could impart. Weary from long travel, Archbishop Ireland arrived in Buffalothe very morning of the funeral. He had no manuscript and butlittle preparation of any kind. His splendid discourse was there-fore entirely impromptu. His text was Revelations xiv., 13:Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from hencefcrth:Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, andtheir works do follow them. The surest way to judge a saint to-day is bythe universal popular acclaim of the multitude and their estimateof the influence of him whom thev pronounce a saint. For cen-turies in Gods Church this popular verdict was the sole base ofcanonization, and surely that popular acclaim is made manifestto-day in this your city of Buffalo. The ecclesiastics.
