Description
English: Church of St Peter and St Paul, East Harling, Norfolk, monument on south side of altar to Sir Thomas Lovell (d.1567) and his wife Elizabeth Paris (d.1591), a daughter of Sir Philip Paris of Linton, Cambridgeshire. (Farrer, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol.1, 1889, p.42[1]). Inscribed: Here lieth buried Syr Thomas Lovel Knyght and Dame Elizabeth his wyf whiche lived together in godly mariage 29 years and hadde yssue 9 sonnes and 6 daughters. The sayd Sir Thomas decessed in the year of our Lord God 1567 the 23 of March and Dame Elizabeth decessed in the yeare of our Lord God 1591 the last of March. May God to joy(ne?) their soules together in Heaven.

Heraldry

3 escutcheons at top, repeated on base but in strapwork shields, left to right (Farrer, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol.1, 1889, p.42[2]):

  • Left: Dexter: Per fess, in chief Argent, a chevron azure between three squirrels sejant gules (Lovell) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.624 "Lovell of Barton and Harling, Norfolk") in base Vert, two chevronels argent each charged with three cinquefoils gules (Muswell) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.719 "Muswell of East Herling, Norfolk") all impaling: Gules, three unicorn's heads and necks couped argent armed or a bordure engrailed of the last (Paris) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.774: Gules, three unicorn's heads couped or "Paris of Little Linton, Cambridgeshire and Poding Norton, Norfolk", with variants)
  • Centre: Lovell quartering Muswell;
  • Right: Paris.
