Description

O Mosteiro de São Bento é o segundo construído em terras brasileiras. Sua construção data do século XVI e possui uma característica peculiar que é a de ser São Bento, ao mesmo tempo, padroeiro da Abadia e do Mosteiro.

O Mosteiro de São Bento não passou despercebido dos invasores holandeses e foi destruído pelos mesmos em 1631. Por esse e por outros motivos o Mosteiro não possui um estilo arquitetônico definitivo. A fachada da igreja é composta por um brasão e uma torre sineira do século XVIII. Destaca-se também o requintado altar-mor com arquivoltas do barroco brasileiro. Toda em madeira revestida em ouro, no trono principal do altar, encontra-se a imagem do patriarca São Bento.

A sacristia conventual é a mais rica das igrejas de Olinda com elaboradas talhas douradas, espelhos de cristais e painéis, mostrando a vida penitente de São Bento. Suas portas são almofadadas em alto-relevo e emolduradas em pedra.
