| Description |
English: Mown and baled heather - Harland Moor This area has (unusually) been cut, baled, and removed with fairly standard farm equipment.
The baled material has been used as a filtering medium to purify water leaving sewage works. Some is even exported to Holland. Although this is preferable to burning in some ways, there is evidence that heather regenerates much better after a burn. The brief heat may help dormant seeds to germinate. Heather moorland in this area depends on regular management, mainly burning, or it steadily reverts to scrub. The line of 'humps' are partially sunken grouse shooting butts. |
